Description

One of the borough’s oldest neighborhoods, Brooklyn Heights was established in 1834 and has been a vibrant area since.

Brooklyn Heights borders are Old Fulton Street near the Brooklyn Bridge on the north end and Atlantic Avenue to the south. The East River forms its western edge and the area stretches east to Court Street and Cadman Plaza, near the Brooklyn federal buildings. Neighboring areas Downtown Brooklyn, Dumbo, Cobble Hill and Boerum Hill, and, as these are smaller neighborhoods, all are easily accessible.

Brooklyn Heights is comprised of blocks of rowhouses, brownstones, former carriage houses and mansions, and a wide variety of architectural styles can be seen, including 19th century Federal style, Greek Revival and Gothic Revival, and Italianate brownstones. “The Cosby Show” and the movie Moonstruck were both set in Brooklyn Heights, and both feature the neighborhood’s picturesque backdrop. Brooklyn Heights was the first neighborhood included in New York’s Landmark Preservation Law, and this history is evident in its blocks. Cadman Plaza anchors the neighborhood and connects residential blocks with the borough’s federal and government buildings.

The Brooklyn Heights promenade offers breathtaking views of Manhattan, the Brooklyn Bridge and the harbor. The neighborhood is home to the Brooklyn Historical Society, and each fall the Brooklyn Book Festival brings a weekend of literary events.

Two of Brooklyn’s most prestigious private K-12 schools, St. Ann’s and Packer Collegiate Institute, are in Brooklyn Heights, as are St. Francis College and Brooklyn Law School. Montague Street is a main commercial thoroughfare, with restaurants and shops, and grocery stores are also nearby. The Brooklyn branch of NYC burger joint Shake Shack is in Brooklyn Heights, and other neighborhood favorites include Vietnamese sandwich shop Hanco’s, Jack the Horse Tavern, American restaurant Colonie, and Sahadi’s, a Middle Eastern market.

Public transportation in Brooklyn Heights is plentiful, and its proximity to Manhattan and Wall Street makes it a popular neighborhood for commuters. The R train stops at Court Street and Montague Street, and the 2 and 3 trains stop at Clark Street. The 2, 3, 4, 5, N and R trains all stop at the nearby Borough Hall/Court Street station.
