The city of Grapevine, Texas, has just under 50,000 permanent residents, but it's not easy to tell this from casual observation. So many people travel in and out of the city every day--shoppers, travelers, commuters--that the population often feels like many more than advertised. Expand the target radius 5 miles from downtown, for example, and the population doubles.

Grapevine is located in almost the exact geographic center of the metroplex, 21 miles northwest of Dallas and 19 miles northeast of Fort Worth. As a result, it's become a popular destination for everything retail and residential. Not to mention anything related to airport travel: hotels, resorts, warehouses, distribution centers, etc.

At least part of that reason for the busy-ness of the area is the proximity of the DFW Airport, just 2 miles south of the city. Grapevine is located in the northeast corner of Tarrant County and is home to DFW International Airport, the third busiest airport in the world. Two-thirds of airport property, including all the terminals, are located within Grapevine. Also located within the city boundaries is Grapevine Lake, a major water source for the metroplex, managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The community became known as Grapevine because of the wild grapes that grow on local trees and shrubs. In the beginning, cattle raising was a major business in the city; now the area has become known for its local winemaking.

Grapevine has 29 city parks totaling approximately 1,500 acres. Roughly 1,200 acres of parkland are on the southern shore of Lake Grapevine. These include 18 miles of pedestrian trails, picnic areas, 10 tennis courts, 18 outdoor basketball courts, two in-line skating rinks, 14 baseball/softball fields, and 11 competition soccer fields. The city also has a 48,000 square foot Community Activities Center offering two full-sized gymnasiums, a weight/cardiovascular room, and a 1/8 mile walking/jogging track for $35/month per person or $75 per family.

One of the largest developments in the city is Grapevine Mills Mall, located off Highway 121 and loop 635. The mall has 1.6 million square feet of shopping, entertainment, and restaurants. Originally designed as the world's largest outlet mall, it's now gone mainstream with over 180 restaurants and stores to choose from.

Baylor Regional Medical Center at Grapevine is a 233-bed, full-service hospital which offers advanced medical care for brain and spine conditions, cardiovascular care, intensive care, diagnostic imaging, women's services, neonatal intensive care, sleep disorders and emergency care.

The largest employers in the area are, not surprisingly, DFW International Airport, the Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center, the Grapevine-Colleyville ISD, UPS, and Baylor Medical Center.

With more than 1,500 guest rooms and 127 suites, the Gaylord Texan Resort is easily one of the biggest hotels in the area, if not the metroplex.
