The top 5 apartment rental websites in Toronto

Posted by Simone Garcia August 11, 2015

Apartment rental websites in Toronto are a crucial step in most renters' search for a new pad. Finding an apartment in the city isn't exactly a walk in the park. While an uphill slog through mosquito-ridden woods may be a more apt description of the Toronto rental rigmarole, the internet is here to help. Craigslist and Kijiji should still be on every renter's list of sites to check, but there are other options.

These are my picks for the top apartment rental websites in Toronto.

Viewit.ca
Enabling the savvy apartment-seeker to search by rental company, neighbourhood, price, and preferred type of residence (i.e. dog-friendly, # of bedrooms, and whether the place is a basement apartment, house, or condo), View It is an easy and reputable online option. Most listings come with photos, and the site allows a searcher to save queries and receive email notifications.

Padmapper.com
Padmapper's intuitive map-based design really helps when your apartment search is neighbourhood-driven. Like View It, Padmapper allows you to filter by number of rooms, price, and type of accommodation (full lease, room for rent, sublet, or vacation-stay). Listings are pulled from other sites like Craigslist and Kijiji.

TorontoRentals.com
Similar to Padmapper in style and layout (if a little less slick), Toronto Rentals is perhaps most useful for hunting down property managed apartments. The handy chart at the bottom of the page showcases the types of units available in a building (one bedroom to four or more), and most photos include a floor plan, and virtual tour of your apartment-to-be.

4Rent.ca
The online version of 4Rent magazine, this site streamlines your search by offering both a map and list format. 4Rent.ca permits a user to save searches, provides a well-rounded list of Canada-wide property managers, and offers handy "tenant tips" for first-time renters.

Casalova
This startup was born as R3NTR. but quickly rebranded. The concept, however, remains the same. The idea is that tenants and landlords can rate each other, which should help each party in making the most informed decision about a rental/renter. This is probably the least robust site for listings at present, but it's certainly worth keeping an eye on as it grows.
