Apartment Hunting Resources

Although it is comprised of five boroughs, New York City is truly a city of neighborhoods. From Greenwich Village to Harlem to Hell s Kitchen to Columbia s own Morningside Heights, each neighborhood has its own style, atmosphere, and personality. There are also towns in New Jersey that are reasonably priced and within easy commuting distance from Columbia. While looking for an apartment it is a good idea to visit prospective neighborhoods.

It is important to be aware of what is involved in commuting to Columbia. Many neighborhoods have reasonably priced apartments, but arranging for transportation to and from campus may be difficult. Be sure to investigate the public transportation services available in any prospective neighborhood.

Columbia University Off-Campus Housing Assistance (OCHA)

OCHA provides advice on finding rentals in non-Columbia owned buildings, and maintains a website and online database of available rooms, apartments, and apartment shares in the greater metropolitan area. This free service is open to all Columbia students, full- and part-time.
