Apartment List has released Maine's results from the first annual Apartment List Renter Satisfaction Survey. The survey, which drew on responses from over 18,000 renters, provides new insights into what states and cities must do to meet the needs of the 105 million American renters nationwide.

"Maine renters report extremely low satisfaction and give their state some of the lowest scores in the nation across several categories," says Andrew Tam, Vice President of Data Science at Apartment List. "The US renter population is at its highest level in 20 years, and concerns about the economy and safety make Maine much less appealing to this important demographic."

Key findings in Maine include the following:

• Maine renters give their state an F overall and the second lowest satisfaction score among all states.
• Just 24% of renters say that they believe the economy on the right track, earning the state a C+ in this category.
• Maine's highest grade is a B in plans for homeownership, with 61% of respondents saying they expect to buy a home in the future.
• Aside from confidence in the local economy and plans for homeownership, Maine earned an F in every single category.
• Maine renters gave their state the lowest score for safety, with just 33% saying they're satisfied with safety and the crime rate.
• Maine had the lowest grade among New England states,trailing Massachusetts (B-) and New Hampshire (D).
• The top rated states for city satisfaction were Utah, Idaho, Minnesota, Colorado, and Oklahoma. The lowest rated states were Connecticut, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Maine, and South Carolina.
