Overview of New Orleans

When you think of New Orleans, you probably immediately picture the "bon temps" of Mardi Gras, jazz and its famous cuisine that is like no other. However, as one of the busiest ports in the world, New Orleans is a big player in the maritime industry. The city is also home to Tulane University, which is considered one of the top research universities in the country.

Different Neighborhoods in New Orleans

Check out some of the different neighborhoods New Orleans has to offer.

French Quarter
Also known as "Vieux Carre," this section of the city is the most well known. Many of the buildings in this area date back to early 1800s, and Bourbon Street in this neighborhood is where many of the Mardi Gras activities occur.

Broadmoor
Located in the Uptown section of the city, Broadmoor is home to a Historic District with many historic buildings located here. This area of the city is known for being diverse in ethnicities.

Lakeview
This neighborhood is located near the Orleans Avenue Canal and close to Lake Pontchartrain. Houses in this area are mostly new construction due to the rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina. The neighborhood is also home to the Robert E. Smith Branch Library.

Mid-City
This largely residential area of the city is centrally located. It is home to the famous Canal Street, which is a main thoroughfare in the city and offers a number of historical buildings and restaurants. The neighborhood is known for the large number of shotgun houses located here.
