Who lives in Greensboro, anyway?

Several colleges call Greensboro home, most notably UNC Greensboro, whose student population exceeds 17,000. There’s definitely a collegiate vibe to many parts of Greensboro, especially the downtown area, which is dotted with art galleries, eateries, and bars, bars, and a few more bars that appeal mostly to the under-40 crowd.

Overview of Findings

Apartment List has released Greensboro's results from the first annual Apartment List Renter Satisfaction Survey. The survey, which drew on responses from over 18,000 renters, provides new insights into what states and cities must do to meet the needs of the 105 million American renters nationwide.

"Greensboro renters report general dissatisfaction with the city, although they do rate it highly on safety and access to recreation," says Andrew Tam, Vice President of Data Science at Apartment List. "The US renter population is at its highest level in 20 years, and Greensboro's low overall satisfaction scores (high individual scores notwithstanding) suggest that it may struggle to attract this demographic."

Key findings in Greensboro include the following:

• Greensboro renters give their city a C overall. This puts Greensboro at 69th place out of 100 cities nationwide.
• 32% of Greensboro renters say that the economy is on the right track, good enough for a B+ in our rankings.
• 68% of Greensboro respondents say they plan to purchase an apartment or home in the future, earning the city an A in this category.
• The city also did well in many other categories: commute satisfaction (A+), recreation (A+), safety (A), and taxes (A-).
• Greensboro scored well above average in every category. One of its worst scores was satisfaction with the quality of schools, where it still earned a B+.
• The survey covered a total of 4 North Carolina cities. Raleigh had the highest grade at A, followed by Charlotte (A-), Greensboro (C), and Durham (D).
• The top rated cities nationwide for city satisfaction were Plano, TX; Boston, MA; Arlington, VA; Austin, TX; and Torrance, CA. The lowest rated cities were Newark, NJ; New Haven, CT; Bridgeport, CT; Hartford, CT; and Columbia, SC.
