Community softball

The Fontana Community Little League Senior Division all-star softball team took first place in the Section 8 tournament this past week.

Community achieved a 3-0 record during the tournament and won the championship with a 16-5 conquest of Apple Valley.

The locals will now advance to the state tournament, which will begin on Friday, July 17. Their first game will be at 7:45 p.m. at Veterans Park in Colton.

Desire Enriquez pitched very well during the sectionals. She struck out 12 batters in Community's first victory and then fanned seven in the title-deciding contest.

Maddie Zeigler was one of the hitting stars for Community, driving in nine runs in the three games, and she also pitched effectively in the second game of the tourney. Savannah Knottingham scored seven runs overall.

Manager Leon Ford said that the team consists of many of the same players who were on the Community Junior squad which won the California Division 3 title last year and took second place in the Western Regionals in Arizona.
