While Fargo may be mainly an agricultural community, there are many employers in the health and technology areas such as Sanford Health, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, US Bank and Microsoft. The city is also home to North Dakota State University, Minnesota State University and Rasmussen College which help drive the economy and culture and whose students rent many Fargo apartments.

Before the housing boom and bust, single-family rental homes made up about 9 percent of the U.S. housing stock. Now they are about 13 percent and still rising, according to Moody's.
