234 years young, incorporated in 1779, Old Town was an important port during the Colonial, Revolutionary and Civil War periods. Alexandria also has the distinction of being chosen by George Washington to become part of the District of Columbia. It was originally in Virginia, ceded to the U.S. Government to form the District of Columbia, and later retroceded to Virginia by the Federal Government in 1846.
