Lubbock is the county seat and economic center of Lubbock County, Texas. Nicknamed the Hub City, Lubbock is the economic center of the Lubbock Metropolitan Area. CNNMoney selected Lubbock as one of the best places to start a small business in 2009.

Lubbock's history is noticeable throughout the city. Musician Buddy Holly was born in Lubbock, and his influence can still be felt there through the Buddy Holly Center, a museum featuring exhibits on Buddy Holly, local musicians, and music history. The West Texas Walk of Fame, which features a Buddy Holly statue and honors local musicians, actors, and other artists, makes its home in Lubbock. Lubbock is also home to the American Museum of Agriculture, the American Wind Power Center, and the National Ranching Heritage Center.

Outdoor events and festivals at Lubbock are popular. The 4th on Broadway festival, held on Independence Day each year, is one of the largest free festivals in Texas and features an all-day street fair in downtown Lubbock followed by a concert and fireworks in the evening. The Lubbock Arts Festival is held each April as a celebration of the arts, and the National Cowboy Symposium and the Panhandle-South Plains Fairs are held each September.
