San Diego has developed affordable housing goals based on the State Redevelopment Law, City Task Force on Affordable Housing, and the city?s comprehensive fiscal plans. The San Diego Housing Commission has many programs in place to assist renters.

Rent from San Diego Housing Commission. Residents with income of up to 80 percent of the area median income of $74,900 can rent one of SDHC?s 1,300 affordable apartments. Apartments are available at even more affordable pricing for low-income seniors and the disabled from SDHC.

Affordable Housing Resource Guide. The San Diego Housing Commission publishes an annual guide to affordable housing in the city. Low and medium-income renters can find out about rental assistance, the affordable housing rental list, housing services information, fair housing policies and rental waiting lists.

Rental Assistance. There is considerable assistance for low and medium-income renters in San Diego from the San Diego Housing Commission. SDHC offers its Achievement Academy free to families receiving housing (Section 8) assistance or living in SDHC rental properties. The Money Project is a three year program for young adults aged 15 to 24 that teaches money management and matches savings.
