Alpharetta is one of metro Atlanta's fastest growing suburbs. Located north of the city, the area saw huge growth when Northpoint Mall opened in 1993. Since that time many Alpharetta apartment complexes have been developed to accommodate the growth. Many of them offer sought-after amenities such as walking trails, exercise rooms and swimming pools. But some local residents have also built apartment homes in some of the older, more rural areas, giving apartment dwellers a chance to have country living close to a suburban area and less than an hour away from one of the country's largest cities.

1. Check the lease for terms. Under what circumstances can your deposit not be returned if you move? Are you required to sign a lease for a certain length of time? If so, are you willing to stay that long or risk losing your deposit?

2. Do you have a pet? Some Alpharetta apartment complexes forbid pets while others accept them but will require you to pay a pet deposit. If you can't part with your pet, be prepared to narrow your search.

3. Do you have children? Because of Alpharetta's growth in the past two decades, many new schools have been built in northern Fulton County. If you are an adult looking to continue your education, Georgia State University and Reinhardt University have satellite campuses so you can study close to home.

While many commute to Alpharetta to Atlanta to work, the city has plenty of job opportunities. The mall and the surrounding restaurants and stores offer plenty opportunities for retail employment. ADP, LexisNexis and Hewlett Packard are some of the city's top administrative and technical employers.
