#ask simon # // Practice is really the basic rule of thumb when it comes to honing your skills be it with art, sport, or anything else! You may have heard practice makes perfect before in the past but honestly I don t agree with that because you ll end up an unsatisfied perfectionist. Instead, think progress, not perfection . Look back every so often to see how far you ve come! You ll be surprised. Study real life! Look at photographs! Gosh, no, I m not saying that you have to draw in a photo-realism manner. You can draw in a stylized manner but know that studying real life can go a long way. Understand how the body works. Don t end up like Rob Liefeld or fall under that dreaded yaoi anatomy syndrome . And of course, have fun! Surely you re not drawing because it makes you feel miserable. At least I hope that s not why you ve chosen to draw because if so maybe you want to take up another hobby. Draw whatever makes you happy. Draw what you want to draw. You should step out of comfort zones ever so often, though. You don t want to get stuck in a rut. There are a number of helpful sources on the internet to help you get started. It would take me quite some time to list them! Just don t rely heavily on the many tutorials that are out there.
