BT offers real choice with home phone and calling plan options; these are designed to give you freedom to tailor your BT phone package to suit your needs. Packages can include unlimited calls to UK landlines at the weekend, or at any time of day, as well as cheap tariffs for expensive numbers and some special introductory offers on certain packages. BT makes it easy for you to switch landlines, and you can enjoy plenty of options for add-ons to your calling plan. There are some excellent deals combining home phone with BT Broadband, which include generous data allowances and genuinely fast internet speeds.

Calling Plans

BT offers two different types of calling plans: Unlimited Weekend Calling Plan and the Unlimited Anytime Calling Plan. Both plans offer unlimited calls to UK landlines which include calls to 0845 and 0870 numbers. BT s unlimited calling plans also come with three calling features included; Call Return/BT 1471, BT Answer 1571 voicemail service, and BT Privacy at Home.

Most people have heard of BT 1471 - simply dialling that four-digit number straight from your BT phone allows you to get the number of the last person who called.

BT Answer 1571 voicemail stores up to 10 voicemail messages at a time and keeps messages for up to 20 days. You can check your voicemail at any time simply by dialling 1571.

BT Privacy registers you for the Telephone Preference Service, which helps stop unwanted sales calls and includes Caller Display (on phones that can support it).

Having a BT Home Phone plan opens you up to lots of additional benefits:

Friends Family Mobile

If you make lots of phone calls to mobile phones you can take advantage of BT s Friends Family Mobile Add-on. This means your calls to UK mobiles are cheaper at only 7.2p a minute at any time, giving you a saving of 42% from the standard rate (normally calls to mobiles are charged at 12.5p).

Friends family International

If you have friends and family that live abroad you can take advantage of the Friends Family International option which covers 234 international destinations and prices start from 2.5p a minute.

If you need the freedom to make calls to international destinations as often as you like then you can purchase the International Freedom Add-on. This gives you free calls for up to an hour to 36 of the most popular destinations and discounted calls to the other 138 destinations.

As a BT customer you will have access to a number of additional calling features, including their 1571 voicemail service, the 1471 service which tells you the number of the last caller and BT Privacy At Home, which controls your incoming calls to stop unwanted sales calls. The cost for all three of these features is just 7.19 a month, or you can purchase just one add-on for 2.59 a month.

What do I need to get a BT Phone Line?

Before you choose your BT Home Phone calling plan you ll need to have some documentation to hand. You will need details of your address(es) for the past 2 years and your bank details on hand to set up a Direct Debit.

If you re currently with a cable provider you normally won t have to contact them as BT should do that for you. If you re moving from a cable provider to BT you can usually keep your existing number as well.

Do I have to pay a connection charge?

Connection charges depend on which BT Home Phone package you re interested in taking. If you re taking a BT Broadband with your Home Phone package then you won t have to. The same applies if you re taking a bundle deal of BT Broadband and BT Vision (BT s digital TV offering) with your BT Home Phone calls.

If you re simply taking out a BT calls package then you ll normally need to pay 29.99 for the connection.

The standard price for connecting a BT line is normally 127.99, but a discount of 98.00 will be applied - taking the price down to 29.99 - if you agree to an 18 month minimum contract. You ll also be required to make a minimum of 10 calls a month (or 30 calls per quarter if you choose to be billed quarterly).

These charges apply if you have to install a new line or reconnect an existing one.

How long will it take to get a new line installed?

If a completely new line needs to be installed then it can take up to 16 working days, subject to an engineer's visit and availability. If there already is a working line in your property and it need to be reconnected, then it should only take around 4 working days. You can arrange for a BT engineer to visit at a time that s convenient to you.

Why should I get BT Broadband with BT Home Phone?

There are a number of good reasons for taking BT Broadband with your calls package, besides just getting fast reliable access to the internet.

The first among these is that by taking BT Broadband with a BT Home Phone package, you ll avoid paying for any kind of connection charge that you would normally have to pay if you simply took BT Home Phone calls on their own.

As well as avoiding paying a connection charge, you ll also be able to sign up for paper-free billing, which means you can review your bill on BT.com instead of having to wait for it to arrive in the mail. You ll be sent an email when your bill is ready to review online, meaning you can check it wherever you are - in the office on your lunch break, when you re out and about on your laptop or mobile phone or when you re at home. With paper-free billing there s no need to wait for the post to arrive.

A BT Home Hub wireless router is also included with all BT Broadband packages, so there are no additional costs for any hardware. Basic security (email anti-virus, spam filters and parental controls) are included as standard with all options, so there s no need to invest in any additional security software either.
