#Rhode Island Housing: Section 8 for landlordsSection 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program In addition to managing 20,000 apartments for low-income senior citizens and families, as well as Rhode Islanders with disabilities, Rhode Island Housing manages the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program in Rhode Island. The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program is the federal government’s major program for helping income-eligible participants afford safe, healthy homes in their community. The Housing Choice Voucher Program allows the individual or family to choose a home, including their present home, and use a voucher to obtain rental assistance. The landlord must agree to the terms of the program and the home must meet safety requirements. The landlord receives a housing subsidy directly from Rhode Island Housing, on behalf of the participating family. The family then pays the difference between the rent charged by the landlord and the amount subsidized by the program. For more information about the Housing Choice Voucher program visit our Renters secion or contact vgalarza@rhodeislandhousing.org or 401-457-1157. For detailed information, you can also view the documents listed on the resources page in this section that are available from HUD. Section 8 Subsidized Apartments The Section 8 Subsidized Apartment Rental Assistance Program is a federal program that helps income-eligible individuals, families, senior citizens, and people with disabilities to pay just 30 percent of their income towards their rent so they can afford safe, healthy homes. For example, if you earn $1,000 a month, you would pay just $300 toward the monthly rent. While there may be a lengthy waiting list for most of these homes, you may want to contact the public housing authority in the community in which you wish to reside to get your name on the waiting list or to obtain more information.
