The Portuguese capital is a city of contrasts, perfectly combining tradition and heritage with the latest artistic tendencies. During summer there are many music festivals and exhibitions taking place and throughout the year the cultural life is quite diverse making it well worth visiting.

In Lisbon you can eat very well, cheaply. In almost all restaurants the servings are quite large at more than affordable prices. The close bonds tying Lisbon with the sea can be seen in the number of fish and seafood dishes featured on most menus. The two shining stars of Lisbon cuisine are sardines and bacalhau, cod, which as the saying goes the Portuguese have a recipe for everyday of the year. Other typical dishes are Caldo Verde (a soup made from potatos, cabbage and pork sausages) and caldeiradas (fish stews). Another thing you simply shouldn’t miss are the delicious pasteis deBelem, custard tarts.

Among the most emblematic sights in Lisbon is the Belem Tower, located in the Tajo River and was the point of departure for many travellers. Close by is the Jeronimos Monastery, built during the 16th century which is considered to be one of the finest examples of Manueline architecture. Other points of interest are the scenic lookout of Santa Luzia and the castle of Sao Jorge which offer spectacular views of the city, the Praca do Comercio for a spot of shopping or people watching, visit the modern buildings of Parque das Nacoes or waner around Convento do Carmo. There is a lot to see in the city before heading back to one of our apartments in Lisbon for a well earned rest.

If you need to buy a souvenir of your visit to Lisbon there are many shops where you can do so. Among the more typical souvenirs are wines and artisanal objects like ceramics, tiles and linen. In the Baixa and Chiado neighbourhoods you will find many traditional style stores whilst in the Rua Augusta and Avenida da Liberdade are the high street chain stores. There are also several shopping centres including Colombo and Vasco de Gama.

The children will be kept very busy in Lisbon. They will love wandering around Parque das Nacoes, where they can play happily in the Pavilion of Knowledge Science Museum and marvel at the fish swimming in the Oceanario, one of the largest aquariums in Europe. For spectacular views of the city take the children on the cable car. Other options for a day out in Lisbon with children are a visit to the Zoo, a ride on the clanking yellow tram and a visit to Kidzania, the children’s city.

Lisbon is considered to have one of the liveliest nightlifes in Europe. The typical areas to go out in Lisbon are Bairro Alto whose narrow streets are lined with bars and as the night wears on the area of As Docas, on the banks of the Tajo, is the place to be. If you are looking for a more traditional night out then the Alfama neighbourhood with its famed Fado bars is the place to go.
