#Housing Authority of Jackson County - Subsidized Housing The waiting lists are open for all programs. Subsidized Housing Programs Subsidized housing is housing where you pay rent based on your income and the balance of the rent is paid by a governmental subsidy. There are a variety of subsidized housing programs available through the Housing Authority. All of these programs have waiting lists that vary in length depending on unit size, vacancies and funding availability. Housing Choice Voucher Project Based Voucher The most popular program is the Housing Choice Voucher Program. commonly referred to as a HUD voucher. This program is funded by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and managed by the Housing Authority. Under this program, participants are issued a voucher they may use in a unit of their choice where the landlord will accept a voucher and the unit meets Housing Quality Standards. Participants pay approximately 30% of their income toward rent and utilities and the balance of that rent is paid directly to the landlord by the Housing Authority. At least once per year, participants must recertify and have their rent adjusted to meet their projected household income. Projected wait times for the Housing Choice Voucher are between 4-5 years. The waiting time depends on the number of participants leaving the program and budgetary constraints. Project Based Voucher is similar to the Section 8 Voucher in that participants will pay approximately 30% of their income toward rent and utilities however, with this program, the assistance is tied to a specific unit. The units are located in affordable housing developments throughout Jackson County.
