#What is the cheapest way to move a one-bedroom apartment cross-country?

Moving a small apartment shouldn’t mean paying big

Traditional van lines are often costly, and truck rental can be a bit inconvenient – especially if you’re not moving much. But there is a solution that offers the best of both worlds. U-Pack ® is an affordable, easy way to move your small one-bedroom apartment across the country. You only pay for the space you use, and we do the driving! Choose a low-cost terminal-to-terminal move, where you load and unload at the service center closest to you, or do a convenient door-to-door move, where we deliver a trailer or container right to your location. Moving a one bedroom apartment is easy with U-Pack.

Trailer or Cube – perfect for moving a one-bedroom apartment

For most U-Pack moves, you can select from two equipment options: a moving trailer or ReloCube (s). Regardless of the option you select, U-Pack puts the power to control the price in your hands – a benefit our customers love.

The trailer is a great option for moves that require a little additional flexibility. At first glance, it may seem a bit too large for moving a one-bedroom apartment – after all, it’s 28-feet long. But, with U-Pack, you only pay for the space you use (down to a 5 ft. minimum), so it’s actually perfect for small moves! Learn more about how “pay for the space you use” works. A typical small one-bedroom apartment will fit into 6-7 linear feet of the trailer and a studio apartment about 5-6 linear feet.

The ReloCube was designed with small moves in mind. Internally it measures 70" x 82" x 93" (lwh), which is normally just the right size for a studio apartment. If you’re moving a one-bedroom apartment, we recommend reserving at least two. If your apartment is packed full, you may consider reserving three. The great thing about U-Pack is that you can reserve as many as you think you need, but only pay for the ones you actually use. Hello, convenience!

How do I know how much space or how many Cubes I need?

As you probably know, every move is different – some one-bedroom apartments are very sparsely furnished while some are packed to the brim. Because of that, U-Pack makes it easy to estimate how much space (or how many Cubes) you need ahead of time. Check out our room-by-room space estimator tool or give us a call – we’re happy to help you figure it out.

Should I move terminal-to-terminal or door-to-door?

If you’re looking to save big, terminal-to-terminal is a great solution. Though it requires a little more work, the lower price may be worth it. Because there’s no delivery or pick up costs, a terminal-to-terminal move averages $300 less than a door-to-door move (this can differ based on how far your location is from the service center). Just bring your things to the nearest service center for loading (in your personal vehicle or a rental truck), and we’ll take care of moving it across the country. When your shipment arrives at the destination service center, just schedule a time to go to the terminal to unload.

If convenience is more important than price, you may want to look at doing a door-to-door move . We’ll deliver the equipment to your home, then just call when you’re finished loading, and we’ll schedule an appointment to pick it up. In many cases, U-Pack door-to-door prices rival that of renting a truck and driving it yourself – especially when you’re moving a small apartment across the country.

U-Pack also offers the option of doing a combination of two types of moves if you need more flexibility: door-to-terminal or terminal-to-door.

Ways to lower the cost of your apartment move

If you’re moving on a tight budget and lowering the cost of your move is on your priority list, here are some ways you can save:

  • Purge before you pack. The less space in the trailer or fewer Cubes you use, the less you pay!
  • Brush up on your packing and loading skills. Maximizing space can be a big money saver, and U-Pack offers some great “how to” resources .
  • Move during an off-peak time. Like airlines, hotels and amusement parks, moving has peak times and off peak times. You’ll normally see lower prices October through March. If you need to move during the peak season (and a lot of people do), check with your U-Pack moving consultant to determine the lowest priced days.

Other things to consider when moving a one-bedroom apartment

As you know, there’s more to moving your apartment across the country than packing, loading and unloading. Here are some other things to be aware of:

Parking permission and permits

It’s important to make sure there’s a safe, legal place to park your container or trailer on moving day. Check with your property manager or landlord ahead of time to get permission, and determine if a permit is required (especially for street parking). Transferring your utilities

Here are some helpful tips on how to make transferring your utilities a breeze.

Reserving the elevator

If you’re in an apartment complex with a freight elevator, contact your landlord or apartment manager ahead of time to block off time for use of the elevator.

Your lease
