What Is Financial Aid?

Financial aid helps students and their families pay for college. This financial assistance covers educational expenses including tuition, fees, books, and supplies. There are several types of financial aid that may be combined into your financial aid package .

To receive financial aid, you must complete LSC's 3-Step process:

  1. Complete a FAFSA (LSC school code: 011145 ).
  2. If requested, provide any additional documentation .
  3. Review/accept financial aid award(s).

Types of Financial Aid

There are several types of financial aid available to LSC students and financial aid packages may include more than one type of award.*

A grant is money set aside by both the state of Texas and the federal government for students who need it to pay for college. Grants are often called "gift aid" because they do not need to be repaid.

Scholarships are awarded on various criteria usually reflecting the values and purposes of the donor of the award.

Scholarships can be based on merit, need, demographics, or career focus. Scholarships are often called "gift aid" because they do not need to be repaid.

Financial aid is available to students receiving VA educational assistance. VA Financial Aid Counselors will assist you with scholarships, grants, loans, Hazlewood Act, Active Duty Military Tuition Assistance, and National Guard Tuition Assistance.

A student loan is designed to help students pay for tuition, books, and living expenses. Student Loans must be repaid.

Usually, student loans will have a substantially lower interest rate and the repayment schedule may be deferred while the student is in higher education.

Federal and State Work-Study Program provide jobs for students with financial need. allowing them to earn money to help pay educational expenses.

Workforce scholarships, provided through Workforce Solutions, allow students to obtain the skills needed to successfully reenter the workforce.

The scholarships cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, supplies, and other related costs for individuals who enroll in one of the training programs on the Gulf Coast Workforce Board’s High-Skill, High-Growth Occupations list.

Exemptions are a type of financial assistance allowing some Texas residents to attend a public college or university in Texas without paying tuition or, in some cases, tuition and fees.

Book Advances allow students to use a portion of their anticipated financial aid to purchase textbooks and supplies from any business.

Satisfactory Academic Progress

All students must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements to receive financial aid at LSC. Federal regulations require all financial aid recipients to maintain SAP in a course of study leading toward a college degree, certificate, or educational objective.
