#Police blow up suspicious device found at scene of fatal shooting in northwest Dallas

Published: July 15, 2015 12:00 pm

Update at 4:30 p.m. by staff writer Connie Lee:

Police say the device was blown up by the bomb squad and turned out to be harmless.

The device was rendered safe and its nature will remain under investigation, said Lt. Thomas Castro, a supervisor in the homicide unit.

Officers have reopened Brockbank and allowed residents to return to their homes.

Police identified the suspect as 46-year-old Thomas Wilson and the victim as 34-year-old Nathan Tonolini. Both men lived at the complex but in separate units, Castro said.

We don t know why exactly the shooting took place, he added. That is still under investigation.

In addition to the device, police found several weapons and ammunition inside Wilson s apartment.

Update at 3 p.m.:

Police say they are evacuating the apartment complex after finding a suspicious device in the suspect s apartment.

A search warrant was obtained for the suspect’s apartment and while performing the search, a suspicious device was located, said Sgt. Warren Mitchell, a Dallas police spokesman.

A bomb squad was on its way to the complex, Mitchell said.

Original post:

Homicide detectives are investigating a fatal shooting at an apartment complex in northwest Dallas.

Officers were called to the complex in the 9800 block of Brockbank Drive around 10:37 a.m. after a 911 caller reported hearing gunshots.

Police told apartment residents that a male resident was shot, and police spokeswoman Monica Cordova said a suspect is in custody.

The identities of the suspect and victim have not been released, and a motive for the shooting was unclear.

Jo Berreras and Branden Visi, who live in the complex, said they heard half a dozen shots and saw a man with a gun walking around.

Hours later, a woman sat on a ledge crying, as another woman consoled her. Drops of blood lined some of the walkways in the apartment complex.

Neighbors said the victim and the suspect lived across from each other in separate buildings.

The shooting victim often whizzed by on his bike in the mornings. The suspect stopped working a couple of years ago and lived in an apartment with his dogs, neighbors said.

One neighbor, who asked that her name not be published, said she didn t know what may have triggered the shooting.

But she described the suspect as a kind, gentle person who suffered a mental condition that sometimes forced him to have hallucinations and believe his life was in danger.

After hearing sirens outside her apartment this morning, the neighbor walked outside to find the suspect sitting in the parking lot as police pulled in.

He just sat down and looked over at me, she said. It just killed me to see him like that.
