An efficiency is a one-room apartment with a private bathroom. It may or may not have a closet. The one room is usually larger than a standard apartment bedroom, since it needs to have separate areas for sleeping, eating and living, and also for a small kitchen (usually referred to as a kitchenette).

Pros

In most cases, utilities are included in the monthly rent, and many efficiencies in areas like San Francisco are from fairly recent renovations of warehouses and other commercial spaces, so they are often in very good condition. Because their space is so limited, there is not much to keep clean. The survey, which drew on responses from over 18,000 renters, provides new insights into what states and cities must do to meet the needs of the 105 million American renters nationwide.

"Renters gave California high marks for overall satisfaction, ranking in the top 10 of states in our study," says Andrew Tam, Vice President of Data Science at Apartment List. "The US renter population is at its highest level in 20 years, and while California scores well for access to recreation, renters expressed strong dissatisfaction with state and local taxes as well as concern about the economy."
