Apartment List has released Michigan's results from the first annual Apartment List Renter Satisfaction Survey. The survey, which drew on responses from over 18,000 renters, provides new insights into what states and cities must do to meet the needs of the 105 million American renters nationwide.

"Michigan renters report overall satisfaction, but have relatively low plans for homeownership," says Andrew Tam, Vice President of Data Science at Apartment List. "The US renter population is at its highest level in 20 years, and while Michigan has a lot to offer renters, low plans for homeownership may lead to portions of this highly mobile demographic moving away."

Key findings in Michigan include the following:

• Michigan renters give their state a B overall. This puts Michigan above the average for states.
• The highest grade for Michigan was an A- for the economy, with 28% of renters saying that they believe it's on the right track compared to a national average of 25%.
• Michigan got a C+ on plans for homeownership, with 57% of renters reporting they plan to purchase an apartment or home in the future.
• One of Michigan's highest grades is a B+ for daily commutes, with 68% of renters expressing satisfaction over travel time to work or school.
• One of Michigan's lowest grades was a C+ for recreation, with 63% of renters reporting satisfaction with access to parks, nightlife, and community activities.
• Three Michigan cities ranked, with Grand Rapids earning an A+, Lansing following with a B, and Detroit earning a F.
• The top rated states for city satisfaction were Utah, Idaho, Minnesota, Colorado, and Oklahoma. The lowest rated states were Connecticut, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Maine, and South Carolina.
