Originally founded in 1914 as the Texas State School of Mines and Metallurgy, University at Texas at El Paso (UTEP) first held classes at the U.S. Army facility, Fort Bliss, just outside of El Paso. However, the initial class buildings burned down in 1917, necessitating the school's move to its present location along the banks of the Rio Grande. After being renamed several times - including Texas Western College in 1949 - the school joined the University of Texas system in 1967. Due to its location along the borders of Texas, New Mexico and Mexico, UTEP is the largest institution of higher education in the U.S. with a majority of Mexican-American students.
