Apartment List has released Salt Lake City's results from the first annual Apartment List Renter Satisfaction Survey. The survey, which drew on responses from over 18,000 renters, provides new insights into what states and cities must do to meet the needs of the 105 million American renters nationwide.

"Salt Lake renters are very satisfied with their city and give it very high marks for the economy and safety," says Andrew Tam, Vice President of Data Science at Apartment List. "The US renter population is at its highest level in 20 years, and Salt Lake receives an A+ in all of the categories that matter to this important group."

Key findings in Salt Lake City include the following:

• Renters give Salt Lake an A for city satisfaction, ranking in the top quartile of cities covered in our study.
• Renters were extremely bullish on the Salt Lake economy giving the city an A+ with 42% of renters saying it's on the right track versus the national average of 25%.
• A slightly below average proportion of Salt Lake renters plan to purchase a home in the future, which earned the city a grade of C+ on plans for future homeownership.
• Salt Lake ranked #1 in the nation for quality of local schools with a whopping 89% of respondents reporting satisfaction versus the national average of 55%.
• Salt Lake, which has world-class ski resorts and excellent hiking within an hour of downtown, earned an A+ for access to recreational activities.
• Overall, the Mountain West scored very well, with Colorado, Utah, and Idaho all placing among the top 5 states.
• The top rated cities nationwide for city satisfaction were Plano, TX; Boston, MA; Arlington, VA; Austin, TX; and Torrance, CA. The lowest rated cities were Newark, NJ; New Haven, CT; Bridgeport, CT; Hartford, CT; and Columbia, SC.
