An introduction to Venice

Venice is one of Europe's most unique and romantic cities, celebrated for its art and architecture in equal measure. The city benefits hugely from its major tourist industry, with approximately 50,000 people visiting this fascinating group of islands, canals and bridges every day. Unfortunately, prices are as large as the city's popularity, making it all the more important that visitors seek out affordable holiday apartments in Venice, rather than settling for expensive hotels.

Venice in brief

Located in the north-east of Italy, Venice is actually a group of 118 small islands, canals and bridges. It is the capital of the Veneto region and - along with the Venetian lagoon - is a World Heritage Site. The city is famous for a number of reasons, including its narrow canals, gondolas, artistic treasures and musical history. It is undoubtedly the ideal destination for lovers seeking a weekend getaway, but offers plenty for all types of tourist.

What not to miss

Piazza San Marco (St Mark's Square) - The main public square dates back to the ninth century and is surrounded by various buildings of significance, including St Mark's Basilica and the Palazzo Ducale (see below). The Piazza is also the location of the Campanile, Venice's famous bell tower, which stands 325 ft tall and provides stunning views over the Lido, the Venetian lagoon and even as far as the Alps.

Palazzo Ducale (The Doge's Palace) - This impressive palace was built around the year 1340 and was the residence of the Doge of Venice, chief magistrate and leader of Venice for more than 1,000 years. Built in the unique Venetian Gothic style, the palace is now a museum and is visited by well over a million people every year.

Canal Grande - Venice's Grand Canal is one of the main waterways, with its 3,800 metres traversing the city's main central districts. Some tourists hire gondolas to experience the Grand Canal, but these are prohibitively expensive for most. A far more affordable way to travel along the Grand Canal is via water bus (vaporetti) or by private water taxi. The route is lined by more than 170 buildings, some of which date back to the 13th century. Buildings of note include the Palazzi Barbaro, Ca' Foscari and the basilica of Santa Maria della Salute.

Teatro La Fenice - This famous opera house is the latest reincarnation of Venice's leading theatre. The original opera house was destroyed in a fire in 1774; the second theatre on the site was also burnt to the ground in 1836; a further fire led the next building to be destroyed in 1996; and the present theatre finally opened in 2003. La Fenice has been the venue for numerous world opera premieres over the years.

Murano - This series of islands in the Venetian Lagoon is famous for its glass making industry. Visitors can see displays on the history of glass making, which has been conducted in Murano since the 13th century. Other attractions on the island include historic churches, artworks and palazzos.

How to get to the city

International visitors typically reach Venice via the Marco Polo International Airport - situated on the mainland - and continue their journey to the city via public transport. Another option is Treviso Airport, which is located 30km from the Venetian archipelago. Once in Venice, the predominant forms of transport are all water-based.

When to go

Most people regard spring and autumn as the best times of year to visit Venice. Travelling at these times enables visitors to avoid the heat of summer and the frequent floods of the colder months.
