About a decade ago, my girl friend and I loaded up my truck, kissed her parents good bye and made the LA long shlog to Loma Linda to move her into med school. Playing support cast member #2,  I drove and goffered around for the week while we found her an apartment, navigated the university and woefully tried to fill our bellies. Let me tell ya, Loma Linda was not - by any stretch of the imagination - an epicurean destination back then.

Not that I m suggesting that Loma Linda is the next NYC foodie scene, but last weekend s visit gave me pause. are those actual little ethnic eateries I see.

Jeeva s Kitchen was hot on my list for a pre-traffic snack. Adjacent to the smallest Indian market I have ever been in, the restaurant resembled something of a dining hall slash conference room. But the smell when you walked in, whoa baby!

My masala dosa ($5) was excellent. Not particularly fermented, the dosa was thin and crisp and the potato filling delicious, if maybe a little in need of some extra chili. The side condiments of sambal and coconut chutney (really excellent in it s own right) made this a perfect mid-afternoon snack. Kinda droolin just thinking about it.

Service, well, it s an Indian restaurant. That said, the entire family is in on the show and as long as you aren t in a hurry it will get you what you need eventually. Everyone was super gracious and it felt like I was sneaking in a meal at the family table, albeit a few hours late.

I left really proud to support another family looking to fulfill the American Dream, one dosa at a time.
